One of the world’s oldest breeds, the Saluki’s heritage dates back thousands of years. The precise origins of this long-limbed sighthound are lost in antiquity, but archaeological evidence shows the existence of Saluki-like hounds in ancient Mesopotamia and elsewhere across the Middle East. The breed name may have come from the Syrian town Seleukia, or the Arabian town of Saluk. Held in high esteem by the sheikhs, the Saluki was used, often with falcons, to course fox, hare and gazelle. The swift desert hound was never sold but presented as a gift of tribute and it was perhaps in this manner that the breed reached Europe, where it has been notably depicted over the centuries in works of art, including paintings of Salukis by Bassano and Veronese in Italy, c. 1560-1575. It was known in Britain in the 19th century or earlier but did not generate particular interest from dog fanciers until after World War I. (CKC)
